It’s here at last! On May 4, 2016, during the Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) in Philadelphia, Lightweight Containers launched a new family of kegs with the brand name UniKeg®. The Lightweight Containers Research and Development team worked in secret on this project for over a year. They opted for a design integrating Lightweight Containers’ know-how and proven technologies in a sturdy design. The new keg uses the Double Wall™ technology, invented by Lightweight Containers, and integrates an American Sankey D fitting. The UniKeg is an extremely reliable, safe and solid keg that can be offered at a competitive price.
A Worthy Alternative
Jan Veenendaal, CEO of Lightweight Containers says, “UniKeg® has benefitted from all the expertise, R&D and know-how within Lightweight Containers, which enabled us to develop a high-quality concept and product. Our customers have a new worthy alternative in UniKeg® for developing successful product-price-market combinations.”
Manufactured in the US and for the US
UniKeg® will be manufactured in the US and will only be sold there to start. Anita Veenendaal, Chief Commercial Officer of Lightweight Containers, says about this decision, “With UniKeg®, we now can serve a segment in the American market that has demanded a one-way keg with a Sankey D fitting. Beverage producers can now opt for a competitively priced keg without compromising on matters like reliability and safety. The fact that we are only producing and marketing UniKeg® in the US shows how high our ambition is for this country.”
The Spear Versus Bag-in-Ball™ Technology
The main difference between the new UniKeg® and Lightweight Containers’ well established product, the KeyKeg®, is that the Unikeg® lacks the KeyKeg®’s laminated inner bag. UniKegs come with the most commonly used coupler system in the US, the Sankey D. With UniKeg®, Lightweight Containers is linking up with conventional keg systems which utilize a spear or diptube to dispense the product.
