KeyKeg | reduce, recycle, reuse materials

Protect resources with sustainable and circular beverage Kegs

We aim to leave the world a better place. When plastic is managed responsibly it contributes to climate and environmental objectives. Several scientific studies conclude that sustainable, circular plastics produce fewer CO2 emissions, protect natural resources, lower energy consumption and reduce waste.

From recycling to a circular economy

KeyKeg is designed for circularity. We want to go beyond traditional recycling to a circular economy in which raw materials from empty KeyKegs are reused to produce new KeyKegs.

KeyKeg is two-way and single-use. It travels one way as a product to customers and returns to us as materials to use again. Circularity avoids both downgrading material quality and downcycling material to produce lower-value products.

KeyKeg environmental responsibility

We do not want to see our sustainable Kegs incinerated or used as landfill, so our goals include collecting all empty KeyKegs for processing and reuse as materials in the production of new Kegs. Our sustainable Kegs are compliant with ISO 18604 because we care about the planet. Furthermore, we use green energy and all our plastic waste from Keg production is reused for new Kegs.

Sustainable OnePET increases circularity

We continue to innovate for progress, supporting our commitment to sustainability. For example, we recycle empty KeyKegs to help us compose OnePET, a blend of mostly recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). OnePET consists of recycled KeyKegs, mainstream recycled PET and just 15% of virgin PET.

The more empty Kegs we collect through our growing Collection Network, the more OnePET we produce to increase our circularity.

Global Collection Network for empty Kegs

We have proven that circularity is achievable in the industrial beverage-packaging market. To further our ambitious goals for sustainability, we are assembling a worldwide Collection Network of partners to collect and process empty Kegs for reuse as materials in the production of new KeyKegs.

Our Collection Network partners enable recycling initiatives that complement existing local waste-management streams.

Connect with us for more information about sustainability and our Collection Network. We also actively seek new partners to join our community and collect empty KeyKegs in their areas.

What the Numbers say

ISO 18604 recyclability

86 recyclable

KeyKeg 30l ISO 18604 recyclability icon white

KeyKeg is compliant with ISO 18604 — the international standard for packaging-material recycling and the environment. 86% of every empty Keg is suitable for recycling.

Designed for circularity

The transparent KeyKeg walls are made from polyethylene tetraphyte (PET), which must be ‘food grade’ quality. However, recycled PET (rPET) does not always meet the required quality. That means the percentage of rPET we can use will fluctuate, and on average each new KeyKeg consists of 42% recycled material.

86% of every empty Keg is suitable for recycling, ideally for reuse as high-quality materials in the production of new KeyKegs. By collecting as many empty KeyKegs as possible, we can increase the amount of recycled material in each new Keg.

To achieve this goal, we are supported by a growing Collection Network who collect empty Kegs for return to us, ready for being processed into high-quality raw materials for new KeyKegs.

The KeyKeg grip ring and basecup are made entirely of recycled polypropylene (rPP). These are the first KeyKeg components that are both 100% recyclable and 100% recycled.

Less transport cost

65 estimated cost saving

Due to their light weight, it is possible to transport 35% more beverage per truckload using our Kegs instead of using steel Kegs. More beverage in each load means fewer shipments, or a transport-cost saving of up to 65%.

Less glass waste

One 20 litre KeyKeg replaces 27 bottles of wine. More wine can be transported per pallet and per container with our lightweight Kegs.

Environmental focus

25 million tonnes of plastic

Fully recyclable components green icon white

Each year, 25 million tonnes of plastic is produced in Europe, of which only 30% is recycled. 39% is incinerated and 31% is used for landfill (EU, 2018). Our goal is reusing all empty KeyKegs as recycled materials for new Kegs instead of letting them be incinerated or used as landfill.

Transporting lightweight, sustainable Kegs cuts CO2 emissions

Use less fuel and produce fewer CO2 emissions by distributing your beverages in lightweight Kegs. This reduces the amount of transport weight. KeyKeg represents around 5% of the total transport weight, meaning it is possible to transport 35% more beverage in each truckload when using our Kegs instead of steel. More beverage in each load means either fewer shipments or a transport-cost saving of up to 65%.

Waste less hot water and use fewer chemicals

Conserve precious natural resources and prevent any negative environmental impact by using sustainable Kegs. Empty KeyKegs, which could be recycled and used again in the production of new KeyKegs, do not undergo the same intense cleaning routines as empty steel Kegs. It is estimated that cleaning a returned steel Keg with harsh cleaning chemicals uses 8-20 L of hot water.

Frequently asked questions

Sustainability is high on the OneCircle agenda. Indeed, it is at the core of our identity. Because being sustainable sometimes conflicts with the aim of not being inferior to competitors, we have till now stated KeyKeg is 100% recyclable. But we know, however, that one small part of each KeyKeg is difficult to recycle and is essentially burnt after use, otherwise called 'thermal recycling'. We want to be fully transparent, we reject greenwashing, and we have doubts about the 'thermal recycling' concept, so we decided to further test the recyclability claim.

Not only do we measure our performance against a strict yardstick, but we also adhere to a verifiable, internationally recognised ISO standard. ISO is the International Organization for Standardization, and we have chosen to test our Kegs for recyclability according to ISO 18604, which rejects ‘thermal recycling’ as sustainable. We agree.

‘Thermal recycling’ is burning waste. Modern waste-management plants use incineration to generate electricity, which suggests waste material may continue to serve a purpose. ‘Thermal recycling’ is often thought of as recycling.

Firstly, we are not only interested in circularity, but also our CO2 footprint. Plastic is produced from petroleum, so burning plastic also means burning fossil resources. Secondly, because we use ISO 18604 as our yardstick. And they think the same way as we do, so according to ISO, combustion should be disregarded.

No. For some time now we have also been using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a method of quantifying the environmental impact of our products. Whereas ISO only looks at the product itself, LCA looks at the entire chain 'from sand to customer'. And in the case of circular products also 'from customer to sand'. This means that the impact of production and distribution is also included in determining the total environmental burden. The advantage is that there are more wheels to turn in reducing the impact on our environment. Another advantage is that when the wheels are turned it is immediately clear what benefits can be achieved, such as reduction of raw material use or CO2 footprint. It provides us with a means of broadly steering the sustainability of our products.
